An exhibition that asks if we can wage peace, a food-and-drink juggernaut in the Hills and a deep dive into the city’s vegan scene – here’s what Broadsheet Adelaide acting editor Tomas Telegramma will be checking out this month.
Is it possible to proactively and aggressively pursue peace? Can it, like war, be waged? It’s a tough question to which I have no answers. I’ll be schooling myself at Waging Peace – a new, interactive exhibition at the Museum of Discovery (MOD). Here, art and science collide. “We want to present not a polarised perception of peace, but one that is more nuanced,” MOD director Kristin Alford told our writer last month. Go on – entry is free.
This weekend I’ll be heading for the Hills. Lot 100 – an ambitious all-in-one brewery, distillery, cellar door and restaurant just outside of Nairne – is finally throwing open its doors. The “fancy shed” (to put it lightly) houses Mismatch Brewing Co, Adelaide Hills Distillery, Vinteloper, Hills Cider Co and Ashton Valley Fresh.
A little more compact (and closer to home) – but just as multipurpose – is Oddio in Bowden. It’s a lofty winery and tasting room for young-gun winemakers Greg Grigoriou (Delinquente) and Steven Crawford (Frederick Stevenson, Giovanni Armani Giorgio), plus a bar and function space. It’s more destination venue, less full-time wine bar – check its social media for upcoming openings.
Now, I’m a carnivore. But if that’s forgotten in the throes of a knockout meatless meal – fine by me. I’ll be revisiting the newly opened Mettā Sol in Goodwood for all-vegan Vietnamese. Try the dumplings – our (coincidentally vegan) photographer says they’re “melt-in-your-mouth” good. There’s also kombucha from local brewer Scull, which has just opened a CBD taproom.
How well does Adelaide do vegan? We ate through six plant-based menus for this very serious investigation. Disclaimer: not dedicated vegan joints, just excellent vegan options.
Veganism aside, here are some new additions for your to-eat-at list: a “contemporary European bistro” in Rose Park, a Hainanese-chicken-rice joint each for the CBD and North Adelaide, and a shmick new Italian diner in Frewville.
Summer is rearing its head. Time to do indoor things outdoors. Go for a balmy Openair Cinemas session at its new riverside home (until the 16th), then a drink upstream at Archie’s Clubhouse (until the 22nd). Find vinyl-based radio network Groundfloor Radio spinning underground dance tunes in a lit-up cubbyhouse.
From the 14th to 16th, Unsound Adelaide returns to the Queen’s Theatre with its magnetic brand of experimental and electronic music. Here are four must-see acts, according to festival founder and co-director Mat Schulz.
And then there’s Christmas. The run-up is never not frantic. Go with it. I’ll be scouring through one of these Christmas markets to a) shop local and b) kill many birds with one stone. We’ve also scoped out five distinctly different local jewellery labels – all of which are worthy of your Christmas cash. There are dainty, 3D-printed rings; earrings inspired by Greek amphora vases; and subtle pieces that celebrate Australian flora and fauna.
