Take five engineering friends, an old boxing gym and a serious love of beer, and what do you get? Sea Legs Brewing Co, Brisbane’s latest brewpub.
The Queensland capital isn’t short of fancy craft boozers – in 2017 it had the fastest growing craft-beer scene in the country. But Sea Legs sets itself apart with a handsome warehouse in an unusual location.
Opening under the radar at Kangaroo Point in late December, it capped off a three-year labour of love for co-owners Jon Fuchs, Tim Wyatt, Harvey McKibbon, Dave Machin and Chris Davies. The group found the venue on Main Street two years ago but council approvals and a string of other obstacles delayed the opening until the end of 2018.
It’s perhaps not the most obvious place for a brewery, but head brewer Fuchs says that’s what they like about it.
“We thought it was unique, it felt right,” he says. “I think there’s something cool about walking out and the Story Bridge is right there, or the fact that when I’m standing on the brew deck I can see it through the windows.”
The space also offered the opportunity to bring something new to the area, which has destination venues such as the Story Bridge Hotel and Brisbane Jazz Club, but has perhaps lacked a local-focused drinking hole.
“I don’t know that I’d say we’re after anything trendy or chic,” Fuchs says. “It’s just about being open to the community and the locals.”
Sea Legs now looks like it’s going to be an agent of change for Kangaroo Point. Since approving the venue, Brisbane City Council has announced plans to revitalise the area with new dining and shopping options. “In a way I guess we set a precedent for them to move forward,” manager Chris Hitchcock says.
There are still some final aesthetic touches to be made to the space, but the hero of the venue – the beer – is ready to go. Fuchs started brewing the Sea Legs Milk Stout on-site this week, with a Breakaway IPA due to pour for the first time on Thursday. A Tropical Lager, Dr Swift’s Golden Ale and the Sea Legs Pale Ale will also be made at the 15-hectolitre brewery, having until recently been crafted at nearby Slipstream Brewing. The remaining taps will be filled with beer from local breweries that have helped out during the Sea Legs gestation, as well as experimental and seasonal drops.
The food menu features straight-ahead pub grub including burgers, wings, charcuterie boards and hand-stretched pizzas. Expect the occasional North American sandwich to appear down the track too; the US-born Fuchs wants to pay homage to his roots.
