Chadstone Shopping Centre came to a standstill today when a car burst into flames in one of the centre's lower-level car parks.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 1.30pm and are currently working to contain the fire, which the Herald Sun reports has since spread to three more cars. Metropolitan Fire Brigade arrived at the scene at 1.38pm.

Heavy black smoke was seen in the area surrounding the shopping centre and its Dandenong Road entrance is closed. There are reports of traffic delays on Dandenong Road, Chadstone Road and Belgrave Road.

Shoppers were evacuated from the car park and those inside the centre were unable to return to their cars.

In a statement, Victoria Police confirmed the car park evacuation and that there will be traffic disruption in the vicinity of the incident.

A Chadstone Shopping Centre spokesperson told Broadsheet the fire took place in a David Jones car park.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 2.27pm and are working to clear smoke from the area.

As of 3pm the shopping centre has reopened for trading but the car park remains closed.
