Check out the inner city’s new crop of bars
There’s a serious number of new bars in Perth angling for a space on your dance card. If you haven’t already been, hit Lucy’s Love Shack for late-night pizza and loud rock. In other music-themed bar news, Los Bravos – the new Spanish surf-rock-themed bar from the No Mafia crew – opened last week. And other October openings we’re tracking closely include Si Paradiso, a “nuovo Italian-Australian” venue at the old Late Night Valentine site, which is scheduled to welcome guests by month’s end. And Goody Two’s, a Japanese whisky bar at Hibernian Place.

Eat some dim sum
Perth dumpling fans have two new dim sum options to consider. [Tim Ho Wan, the Hong Kong restaurant once lauded for being the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred eatery, opened its first Perth outpost last month]. And up-and-coming restaurateur Ian Chin threw open the doors to his ambitious two-storey modern Cantonese restaurant, Shy John.

Drop in on the new Highgate Continental
Step away from the online shopping cart and redirect those dollars to some local businesses. After three years on Beaufort Street, Alex Malcovic and Andrew Sinclair have moved Highgate Continental to William Street. Despite the change of address, the store will still stock a serious arsenal of vinyl records and art and photography books.

Drive out to the Perth Hills
“Why don’t I do this more often?” It was the overarching thought in my head after driving out to the Bickley Valley in the Perth Hills. Like the Swan Valley, the Perth Hills is well within striking distance of the city centre – you could be there in as little as half an hour, traffic allowing – and deserves more of your time. Gorgeous vistas aside, local heroes such as cafe Mason & Bird and burger bar Buns & Co are offering options as good as those of their compatriots in the city and there’s a wealth of local wine and cider producers to visit too. The latest reason to hit the road is the recently opened Mistelle, a relaxed French bistro from Benoit Lasplace (Rockpool Bar & Grill, Print Hall) serving updated French classics in a dining room overlooking the vines at Hainault Estate.

Western Australia gets a Field of Light
Drive out to the hills not enough for you? Fill up the tank and set course for Albany. While we’d gladly travel to eat the glorious French-Viet cooking of Amy Hamilton at Liberte and drink bar manager Keryn Giles’s snappy cocktails, the newest reason to hit the Great Southern is to see Bruce Munro’s Anzac-commemorating Field of Light installation at Mount Clarence. The exhibition’s 16000 glass “blooms” will give this season’s wildflower crop a serious run for its money. The installation opens this week and runs until Anzac Day. Entry is free, but tickets for upgraded packages can be bought here.
