Michael Forde and Paul Aron clearly don’t like standing still (or free time). After a red-letter year that saw the pair fit out six different venues – chief among them Tiny’s, Offshoot Coffee and, over the December long break, Panama Social – the hospitality duo is kicking off the new year with another opening: Mary Street Bakery City Beach.
“We had a big year with all the other openings so weren’t overly keen to do something, but the timing was right and we really want to be close to the beach,” says Forde. “Mary Street fits well with that lifestyle.”
Taking over the space occupied by neighbourhood restaurant Park & Vine, Mary Street’s fifth outpost will be a family-friendly 100-seater featuring alfresco and indoor areas. Expect Mary Street aesthetic signatures such as black steel, mismatched timber and a large counter offering the brand’s various baked goods. The newest addition to the Mary Street family will also be licensed with beer, wine and a small selection of cocktails available through the day – top of the morning to you, recovery Bloody Mary.
Long-time Mary Street Bakery collaborator Mike Talbot – a former head chef at the original Mary Street Bakery Highgate – will be running the kitchen. In addition to core brunch items including the slow-cooked eggs, the far-reaching menu has been designed to appeal to the area’s broad customer base. Grilled ham hock terrines fit the bill for sturdy brunching, while health-conscious eaters will gravitate towards the acai bowls. A kids menu will be offered and lunch will include house-made ricotta gnocchi, open steak sandwiches and a Nicoise salad with grilled swordfish.
