When Nathan and Sasha White started building their own furniture and homewares, they didn’t expect others would be interested in their handcrafted pieces. Yet within seven years of starting their brand, Mr & Mrs White, they have opened their first retail store. It’s two blocks from Manly beach.

“We didn’t have much money to furnish our place after we got married, so Nathan would make some pieces that would fit in the small places we had,” Sasha tells Broadsheet. “My nan bought me a sewing machine and I started sewing cushions and duvet covers, and we kind of fell in love with making things for the home. Friends and family liked what we made, and then we realised maybe we could actually do this together.”

Nathan studied boat building, completing a four-year shipwright apprenticeship, and Sasha did a degree in design majoring in graphic design. There are now more than 60 pieces in the Mr & Mrs White collection, ranging from couches and beds to dining tables and stools, as well as smaller items such as coasters, linens and cushions.

All their pieces are made up the road in their Brookvale factory, which previously served as a showroom. “It feels like we just started out, but when we look back at how we were making things in our backyard, we’ve come a long way,” Sasha says.

Designing furniture is only half of Mr & Mrs White’s business. They also do shop fit-outs; they created fixtures for next-door neighbours Assembly Label and The Horse, as well as Bondi Wash, and Natalie Marie Jewellery in Avalon.

Sasha is thrilled to be fitting out the couple’s own store with a minimalistic approach that complements their designs. “This retail shop is really exciting for us because it’s our own product. We got to do the fit-out of our own store – finally – and have our own products in there as well.”

Mr & Mrs White is also stocking select pieces from other designers. There’s a concrete candle range from New York’s Novel Studios and photographic prints by New York-based photographer Glen Allsop.
